Connecting with Nature & the Elements

Updated: Aug 3

The Five Element theory is a fundamental concept in many traditions. It encompasses various principles and energetic states that govern all of existence. When these Five Elements are in balance, there is harmony; when they are not in balance, there is disharmony.

Here's an easy and beautiful way to bring all our Five Elements into balance. I use the Elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. If you are working with the Chinese Five Elements, Metal is the same as Air, and for Wood, you can hug a tree :)...Metal is the same as Air, and hug a tree for Wood ;)

Firstly, go outside to the local park, trail, forest, or garden.

Connect with the Earth, if possible barefoot. Be aware of how solid and supporting Earth is, nourishing you and providing you with everything you need.

Lay down on the Earth and dig in your fingers and toes. Notice how it feels to be held by the Earth as she provides a solid foundation and supportive container. Bring your awareness to the foundation and container, the solidity of your physical body, your muscles, bones, and organs. Appreciate how it supports and takes care of you. Just like Mother Earth, if we take care of our physical body, it will gift us with health, strength, nourishment & vitality.

Connect with Water, go to a lake, ocean, or river. Feel how Water is old & wise. We all came from the great primordial ocean and the waters of our Mother's womb. We are mainly water and still carry the ocean within us. We live on a Water planet. We all have access to Water's deep primordial wisdom.

Water flows over and around any obstacle. Water is soft yet carves through the hardest stone without fear. Water teaches us to do the same in our lives. To face fear with courage, hardness with softness, rigidity with flow. To move through life with deep instinct, natural connection, and playfulness.

If you are not near water, take a shower or drink a glass of water. Feel how it cleanses & purifies. Connect with your inner water, the fluids of your body, and how they keep everything lubricated, flowing, and at ease.

Water is the realm of our emotions. It gifts us courage, access to the deep dream state, imagination & mystery. It contains our pure potential.

Connect with Fire, feel the warmth of the sun on your face, and remember that the sun provides all the energy for life to exist. The sun's warmth connects us to a deeper part of ourselves, our passion, joy, and bliss, it's the heat of devotion. Fire is our ability to grow, transform, and transcend. We are all drawn to Fire, the dancing flames feed us at a soul level and remind us of the power & magic of life

When the sun isn't visible, light a fire or a candle, practice a candle meditation or devotional sun salutations. Or simply connect with your inner fire, your power, energy, vision, and the heat of your digestive system. Fire feeds & nourishes. It gives life & energy to everything we do. It keeps us feeling 'alive' and 'excited' about life.

Connect with the Air. Feel the breeze on your face. Listen to the wind rustle in the trees. Notice how the wind is flexible and free, without restriction or restraints. Without the Air Element, there would be no movement, life would be stagnant. It's the movement of blood, the flow of our thoughts & breath, and the communication of the nervous system.

We can connect with the Air element through the in and outflow of our breath, this is our life force, our vitality, it brings in life-giving prana and releases what our bodies do not need. It teaches us to do the same in our lives. To know when to let go and move on. Our breath connects our inner world with our outer world. It's a flow, a pulse, a rhythm, without attachment. It inspires us, takes us higher, and raises us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Connect with Space, where all other Elements exist. Feel the space around your physical body, where you are in space right now. Feel the space in your body, we are not solid, we are 99% space, how freeing is that?

Clear out clutter, and create space in your life & relationships. Create space for the new. Connect to space in your thoughts & beliefs. Practice meditation. Examine old patterns and conditioning and release them with love. When we create space in the mind, it has the freedom to go anyway and experience anything without constriction, it has infinite possibilities!

Connecting with the Elements is a profound practice and can bring us physical, emotional, mental & spiritual health. Practice a little everyday, and be grateful for the wonder that is you "Working with the raw natural elements is a process of connecting with the external elements and internalising their qualities. Doing this ultimately leads to connection with the essence of the elements which, in the shamanic path, is considered part of the Soul. At this level, connecting is healing" - Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche
